Wendy: Featured Trial

Hello all, I would like to introduce you to Wendy! She is a referral from a past client of mine and that is always a huge honor in my book :) Ok, back to the trial, Wendy had a pretty good idea of what she wanted for her hair; a low updo that was intricate, but at the same time, not trying too hard. She has an insane amount of hair which is great because we had a lot to work with, but part of the challenge is taming it so it doesn't look out of control.
For the first makeup look, I kept it warm, natural and just enough to enhance her eyes, the feature she wanted to accentuate. The second look was a very dramatic, smokey purple. Wendy is opting for the subtle look for her wedding, but it was fun to try the dramatic look since it was out of her comfort zone.

Playing With Shadows

One of the big perks of the slow wedding season is that I'm able to have some free time to do more creative work. I've been looking through images for inspiration and I finally came across an idea that I liked. I've always loved the shots with the dramatic shadows that hit the face just a certain way to create some mystery that was pleasing to the eye. With that, I coordinated with my trusted, talented photographer friend, Jomar Enciso and my sister Jenney. Jenny doesn't have much modeling experience, but the camera loved her and by the end of the shoot, she was a pro. She is also a freelance makeup and hair artist and one of the quirks of doing makeup for another artist is that they like to do thier makeup a certain way so she couldn't resist stepping in everyso often to "help" haha. At the end of the day, we got some beautiful images that I'm incredibly proud to share, I hope you enjoy!

Kristine: Featured Trial

My first meeting with Kristine was a week before her wedding. Not ideal , but a combination of planning her wedding from out of state and just not having any luck finding the right artist led us up to our late meeting. It turned out to be a really great trial considering, we got along very well and I learned about the very romantic and elaborate proposal, her wedding details, her travels and how she is very natural at heart. :) Kristine was very honest and open-minded during the trial, which are two key elements for a successful trial. I think it was great that she felt comfortable enough to be able to do so.
We tried the half up do which she initially thought would be her wedding hairstyle, but she fell in love with the side chignon and decided to go with that for her wedding day. We also did two different makeup looks, one that was a soft beige brown and the other was a darker espresso brown. In the end Kristine decided to go with something in between and soften the look up with brown eyeliner instead of black.
Kristine's wedding was earlier this month and taking all her notes into account, we came up with something that was very fresh and most important, something she was comfortable with. Her florist managed to get her hands on plumerias, Kristine's favorite flower and I suggested to Kristine at the trial, that she should ask her florist to set some aside for her hair. The plumerias topped off her up do and she looked so amazing and happy. I had such a wonderful time getting her and the bridal party ready and I can't wait to see the wedding pictures.

I apologize for not blogging for a while now. Having hosted Thanksgiving and Christmas this past year, it didn't leave much free time, and the free time I did have, well--- I was either eating or sleeping :)
A big Hurrah to those brides getting married in December and January! They've taken a great gamble with the weather and won the weather jackpot. It is simply spectacular right now; very cold and brisk in the morning, but by lunch the sun breaks through the clouds and warms our little faces. It even gets hot! As lovely as it is, I am hoping for rain...we need it.
I wanted to share pictures of Monica, one of my December brides. After spending some time with Monica during her trial, I could already tell that she was strong-willed and decisive which is not a bad thing at all. It would also explain her current position as a project manager:)She came in with a good idea in her head of what she wanted. We went with strong smokey eyes that would photograph beautifully and kept the rest of the makeup very natural and light. For the hair, she was all about the texture and did not want anything slicked or too smooth. The result were cascading curls that were tucked in to create an intricate updo. I think the overall look screamed sophisticated and modern which reflected her peronality well; from the earrings to the her lovely, flowly dress. What ia waste it would be if it weren't all capture beautifully by BLLEW Photography. We've done several weddings together now and I simply love their work.

Lily of Boudoir by Lily has done it again! She is offering a Valentine's day promotion that would made such a personalized, steamy gift to that special someone. I've always loved the whole concept of boudoir as it's a chance to truly embrace your femininity, confidence and womanly curves. You often see the sensual smokey eye with loose tousled hair, but really, anything goes. These gorgeous pictures were taken by the talented Lily and Benson of BLLEW Photography whom I'm a big fan of. I love the clean composition and use of natural light. Pictures do not need to be gimmicky or overly processed to be beautiful, less can definitely be more. The airbrush makeup is light with a touch of purple for color for Thuy's eyes and just simple loose waves for the hair.

Sally was first introduced to me by my friend Vera of Va de Vie Events; Vera is a wonderful wedding coordinator whom I met many weddings ago and she kindly continues to refer me to her clients. After our initial trial, Sally was able to give me feedback on things we could to a little different for the wedding day.
I met Sally at the beautiful Valencia Hotel where she was staying and where all her wedding festivities were being held. The Valencia Hotel is a gorgeous place to have a wedding; the spacious courtyard, modern fountain, pretty landscaping with a Mediterranean look and feel. On top of that, it was a clear, sunny day. Sally loves color and wanted to incorporate purples into her eye shadow. My special touch for her was the NARS blush in 'Desire' which can look really intimidating color in the pan, but with the right dose, it gave Sally a very fun, fresh, uplifted look. She was incredibly happy with the final look and it shows in the pictures. The images were captured by Sonia Savio Photography, who did a great job of capturing the beautiful bride.

Rhea is such a fun person! I met her and her sister at our trial and it was just non-stop laughter, we talked about family, work, her wedding details, it was an amazing time and I couldn't wait for her wedding. She was having an intimate wedding at city hall, but that didn't stop her from wanting to glam up for her special day. Her gorgeous thick long hair was pushed to the side to offset the one-shoulder detail and her birdcage hair band added a bridal touch. Sensuous smokey eyes and flirty lashes made her eyes pop and added just enough drama.
Saving the best for last, have you seen the wedding bouquet? Its a bedazzled, blinged out masterpiece that she made herself. It's the first time I've seen it and it's so creative and unique, best part is that she can keep it forever! Her adorable navy blue pumps were amazing as well and went perfectly with her overall look. I loved being part of her special day.

Pauline: Featured Trial

Pauline's wedding isn't until next year, but you can tell she's a planner if she's already looking for her artist almost a year in advanced! I love that even though she's very natural, she was pretty adventurous during the trial. She loved the day smokey eyes that I tried on her using browns and beige's. Pauline's hair wasn't too long, flowing just past her shoulders, but with a year to go, I'm sure she can get some good length. The low centered bun with loose side swept bangs finished off her look. With the additional length, you can imagine that it would be a fuller version.
Pauline's fiance is Hindu and she actually hired me for her American ceremony as well as the Hindu ceremony the following day. Two days of celebration will hopefully be two times the fun!

Kristen: Featured Trial

Kristen is another one of my destination brides from SoCal, which tends to make scheduling a trial a bit trickier. We were able to meet less than a month before her wedding and since Kristen had a strong idea of what she wanted, we nailed her look on the first try. It's not shown here, but for her flower hair piece, she was having her seamstress take leftover pieces from her dress alterations to create a customized flower. I think that's a really neat, inventive way to use fabric scraps!

Cherry booked me a year in advanced for her wedding after being referred by one of her good friends. When we finally got around to doing her trial, she was torn between two looks, the first had two french brains to the side with a bit of volume and this final look with tons of volume and a high intricate bun in the back. That look suited her so well and you can see it in her body language that she loved that look and she was ready to wear it down the aisle. For the makeup, I gave her some really glam lashes with purple smokey eyes. Everything else was kept very simple so the eyes could tell the story. You can tell she made a beautiful bride and I'll be sure to post pictures once I receive them from her.

Linda: San Mateo Wedding

Linda wanted to keep her look very simple and clean since she doesn't wear much make up on a day to day basis. We chose to do a very soft, subtle smokey eyes using plums and purples that would accentuate her eyes, but not take away from her natural beauty. Soft pink cheeks and flesh tone lips finished her look.

Pouy is a September bride who is celebrating on two seperate days. Her American reception is on a Friday and her traditional Laos ceremony is on Sunday, so naturally, we had to come up with two seperate looks for her two seperate days of celebration.
She wanted to wear her hair loose and touseled for her first look and have her makeup light and natural. Her second look was a mix of tradition and modern. Usually Laos brides have a tight pulled back bun sitting high on top of thier head. We took that idea but instead made a very full bun that would add drama and interest. The makeup was a smokey purple eye to compliment her tradtional dress. I can't wait to see all the elements come together for each day!

Ennie:: Engagement Shoot

Ennie got married over the weekend and I was so excited for her. These pictures were taken a year ago when I first met Ennie for our trial. She is simply gorgeous as is and it definitely didn't take much to bring out her lovely features. Her wedding makeup was very similar, but I did take it up just a smidge since it was an evening wedding. Her dress had a very simple sillouette, but it was gorgeous and perfectly suite her taste. I hope to get wedding pictures to share soon! Congrats again Ennie, I wish you many happy years of marriage!

Joy is a destination bride and didn't have time to do a trial with me, but from her pictures, she wanted something very light and natural. She already had such pretty doll like features that she didn't need much to make her a radiant bride.
Her hair was very choppy and layered and she originally wanted a down do, but I let her know that the length wouldn't be there once it was curled. She trusted my judgement to do an updo and she loved the results. It showed off her neckline, set her apart from her bridesmaids and the hair looked more full :)

Leslie was so fun to chat with while going about her trial. With her busy lifestyle, she's pretty minimal when it comes to her everyday makeup. I wanted to play up her beautiful brown eyes with a wash of peachy gold, with soft browns contouring her crease area. A touch of blush and a soft pink lip finshed off the look. Can I just say her hair was a dream to play with? It was so soft, manageable a did whatever I wanted it to!

Ritasha is such a beautiful bride and an even more beautiful person. Her husband is a very lucky guy!
She had an American & Indian fusion wedding so for her look, she wanted to define her eyes, but keep everything else light, with a flush of pink. She also chose a classic side updo, which turned out to be a very smart thing since the temperature was well into the 90's. I love that she wore an ivory sari, it was so elegant and looked so pretty against her brown skin. The veil set everything off and she was simply breathtaking. I met Rosalind through a friend of mine and she contacted me a year in advanced to book me for her engagement session. They are such a great couple and it's always a joy seeing your friend behind the lens. I was thrilled when I learned that the session was with Ed Pingol, who I really enjoy working with. He has a unique sense of style and gets booked up fast!
Rosalind has big beautiful eyes and a great smile and not surprisingly doesn't need much to enhance those features. She wears little makeup on a day-to-day basis, so I kept it as light and comfortable as possible. Airbrush makeup did amazing things for her skin which needed just a bit of evening out. She loved the results and her confidence shows in the gorgeous images!

Ariel: Featured Trial

Ariel has energy for miles and it was hard keeping up with her, but she was an incredible joy getting to know. She's currently a grad student and planning a wedding so I'm quite amazed that she's as chipper as she is. For the trial she didn't have a firm idea on what she wanted, but she knew it had to be light, natural and organic-- nothing too structured or dramatic. I tried to do just that by incorporating a fun braid and keeping everything else a bit touseled. She was absolutely delighted with the results and I think it's perfectly suited for her wedding. I can't wait for her wedding in August!

Linda: Featured Trial

Last year, I had the honor of getting Linda's older sister, Elizabeth, get ready for her wedding. In July this year, Linda will be getting married and I am ecstatic to be part of her big day as well.

During the trial, Linda knew exactly what she wanted to do with her hair, the classic side updo that she would embellish with a fluffy pink flower. When it came to the makeup, she was torn between two very different looks, vintage with the cat-eye liner and soft red lips; then there was the day smokey look with perfectly pink lips. Rest assured I told her why not do both? The idea got her very excited! Both styles looked great on her so she will be wearing the vintage look for the ceremony and afterwards, I would transform her makeup to look more soft and romantic. Congratulations Linda, you are going to make a beautiful blushing bride!

Cece is actually a friend of mind and her wedding is in August and I'm so excited bc I actually get to attend! The nature of my work allows me to come early in the morning and leave as soon as the action begins. Not to say my work isn't important though, I'd like to think I set the tone for the wedding and the timeline. I have to get the bride looking great...feeling great...and on time of course!
Well anyways, Cece is incredibly natural and doesn't wear any makeup...none, but she does take great care of her skin which I noticed (and appreciated!) right away. She needed minimal foundation, just a light mist of airbrush foundation, but she wanted to play up her eyes and let me tell you, she has great eyes to play up. Then for her hair, she had no idea what she wanted...it just had to be up and out of her face which is ideal for the the August bride. To make her updo special, I made the bun as big as I could so that it would peep out even when looking straight on to the camera. She absolutely loved the end result and I personally thought it totally suited her. Congrats Cece, I can't wait to get you ready AND attend your big day!

Kim picked out an updo I was very excited about because it was something I never attempted before. I'm always up for a challenge though and the end result was quite lovely. In the end she decided she wanted to have her hair down for the wedding instead which is fine by me--- pick whatever you feel most beautiful with!

It took Kim a while to get used to her makeup since she's such a natural person day to day, but she was a sport because she did want to make things look good for the camera. She ran off to her engagement shoot after our trial and her pictures captured by Lilly of Bllew Photography came out really soft and subtle.

Julie is sweetest thing, I met her just a week before her wedding because I had my own wedding to deal with so I couldn't meet her any sooner. She was patient. kind and I think just had overall good faith that things would work out and they absolutely did! She had her wedding last week at the Brazil Room in Berkeley and it's a quaint and well kept facility well spectacular views. Needless to say she was a gorgeous bride and I'm absulutely thrilled for her!

What an adventure! After the endless planning, DIY crafts and griping with the parents, our wedding day finally unfolded. My friends and I started the day getting ready, doing each others hair and makeup and we took pictures and headed to the church. After mass, we took pictures with the entire wedding party and headed back to the hotel to touch up. We then went to the restaurant to greet guests and start up the party! It was such a long day filled with excitement, anxiety and happiness.
However in the months leading up to the wedding, I thought a lot about my dad who I lost four years ago and hit a patch of depression. I was so bitter and resentful that he would not be there to walk me down the aisle and share my special day with me. I miss him in a way that words can never explain. Eventually, I had to talk myself back into reality and realize that he's really gone and I need to focus on the people in front of me.

There are many things that make my work so rewarding--the glowing happy bride, a great review, a referrel from a past client, meeting talented vendors--but the feeling I got when I saw my work published in a magazine, it just tickles me in a whole other way! Heather is such a sweet person and had a really sweet easy wedding to match her personality. She opted for the more retro pin-up look and I think it suited her so well. Defined eyes and a strong lip really played up her features. She was also lucky enough to have a professional friend as a photograther, Jennifer Paschal, who was also amazing to work with. Let's not forget the wedding coordinater who made the connections for this lovely wedding, Vera Devera. Can I also just mention that I LOVE her bouquet!

Vintage style photography is usually not my cup of tea, because the drab colors and effects can sometimes make things look a bit a sad and old. I guess the key is that it does create a different, interesting feel that can make it really fun. The shoot pictured is a great example of just that; my past client Miriam requested smokey eyes with soft waves for this particular shoot. It turned out beautiful and her eyes really pop.Thanks Theresa Knight for the great images and best of luck to you!

Megan is such a stunning bride! She had the extravagant wedding to follow. We started the morning getting her ready at the Palace Hotel in the city and they had an intimate ceremony at the UC Berkeley campus followed by reception the Neiman Marcus Rotunda. How spectacular is that! Truly a memorable wedding.

I had a hard time not putting all of her pictures in this post because her photographers captured her day perfectly. With a mix of candids, beauty and editorial shots, I was blown away with the images. Finding a great photographers is no small task, but I highly recommend Choco Studio to capture your own day!

Sima and Sushil are such a fun loving couple! I'm so glad to have met them and ever more, I want to know how they got through their four day celebration with energy to spare! Did I mention we started the day at 4 in the morning?? That's early even for me, but she was such a trooper.

Her morning look was soft and sultry, just enough to bring our her amazing eyes. The evening was when the fun and drama began, she opted for a fun blue color that was smoked out and pale nude lips to follow. It was so fun because as you imgaine, I don't usually get to go so dramatic.

Christy is generally a very natural little to no makeup type of person, but she really let me go all out when we met for a trial. She wanted it to look great for the pictures and I cautioned her not to lose herself for the sake of the pictures. She ended up really loving the results and this was confirmed by her family friends and fiancee, which is great! She will be a beautiful bride on her upcoming wedding!!

Alva is such a sweetheart! She hired me for her small family wedding and then again for her reception. This was what we came up with for her reception. A twist on a pin-up look, with smokey eyes, winged liner and a nude lip. She LOVED the results and she paired the look with a tea length white dress. Megan...what can i say, she was a very enthusiastic bride! She was incredibly joyful and loved everything I did for her. It got to a point where it made me a little nervous! "Are you sure you're being honest with me? Don't be too agreeable, because I want you to get what you want." But nope, she was insistent that she was happy with everything.
She told me she searched high and low for a makeup and hair artist and after meeting with me she told me "everything happens for a reason" Needless to say, I was very happy for her that she was happy with me and I'm even more excited to be part of her upcoming wedding!!

I had the pleasure of meeting Semira for our trial, which turned out to be successful in my books! From the pictures that she sent me of herself, I as really worried about her hair. It barely grazed her shoulder and I mentioned that we might need extensions if she wanted to acheive her desired updo. When I meet her in person and she had tons of hair to work with and the updo turned out well. She was thrilled with the results!

Susan came to me and knew exactly what she wanted. She wanted a very low fuss look with no curly cues or anything fancy. The simple knot and hair swept out of her face gave her the results she wanted and she loved how the eyes gave a flash of brightness.
